The first place I lived when I moved to Vancouver was a shared rental house on Frances St., just off Commercial Drive. Except for brief periods of residence in Victoria and the Gulf Islands, I have lived on Vancouver’s eastside for almost 25 years, ‘The Drive’ being my home turf. Some of the photographs I have are of buildings or back lane scenes that no longer exist, with ‘progress’ continuing to creep inevitably eastward. I sometimes feel a sense of urgency as the old wooden fences, broken stone steps and peeling storefronts that help characterize this part of the city disappear. The house I lived in on Frances St. is long gone.
