Ferries have taken me to many beautiful places in British Columbia. My first ferry trip was from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo in the summer of 1979, when a friend and I drove to B.C. from Ontario, dropped off the borrowed car and spent the next month hitchhiking. I was thrilled to be taking a sea voyage. Within weeks of moving here, 5 years later, I found myself on a ferry to Mayne Island to join new friends for a Thanksgiving potluck in a cabin in the woods. Thrilled again. Now, after all the years, it would be easy to become blasé about the trip and the views, but I still sit by the windows looking out or wander on the decks in all weathers, collar turned up against the wind.
